Chapter One
Getting Attuned
Sybil Pyne flopped on too the bed her Mother was also resting on. The fowl ship air stung at her nostrils and caused her stomach to turn like the waves out side the ship last night.
?Haven?t you something so do, Sybil??
?Ney, Ma?am.? Sybil replied, too seasick to do anything anyway.
?It?s a perfectly sunny day out on deck, why don?t you take Elsabeth up to the poop deck with you? Better yet I could come too. I don?t mind staying down her watching her and keeping her dancing, troublesome hands out of trouble. I just don?t like staying down here.? She sighed.
?I can agree to that! I just wish there was something to do up there.?
?Your younger brother Jervis seems to find a relatively reasonable a bit too do up there.?
?That?s because he?s always in the company of the sailors. They?re always teaching him new things.?
?I?m sure we can fine plenty-? Then suddenly Sybils mother was interrupted by Hugh.
?Hugh, my dear, you ran down here so fast you would think there was danger on deck!? Mother disquieted.
?Good news! We?re at four hundred fathoms!? Hugh cried.
?That?s wonderful Hugh...What does it mean?? Sybil asked.
?It means were almost close enough to see land!? Hugh excitingly answered.
?Quick, let?s go onto the deck now.? Mother was excited to, you could tell by the tone of her voice. But then again you would be too if you had been wedged and jammed on a malodorous, creaky, leaky ship for months!
?Come on Elsabeth, let see if we can see land.? And Sybil grasped Elsabeths? hand. This time she didn?t fidget or try to break away as she normally would.
It was beautiful! Even though the land looked as though it was a tiny black band positioned along the sea, is was stunning! Sybil started make a list of words describing it.
?Gorgeous, delightful, beautiful, and, outstanding!?
She was in such good spirits now.
Just then Father came up to mother and Elsabeth.
?Do you see that?? Father asked short little Elsabeth, and then picked her up so she could see.
?That is America.?
??????????????????????????????????????????????
?Father, my legs, they be so wobbly. It?s like the first week on the hip all over again!? Sybil bobbled and stumbled a few more times walking.
?It will be awhile before you get your land legs.? Father explained.
?But I want them now!? Elsabeth cried
?Be patient my Elsabeth! We will all need patience here if we want to get a long.? Mother chimed in.
??????????????????????????????????????????????
That summer we all helped, father and mother were right- we all would need lots of patience. We also needed perseverance, hard work, and we needed to work together because our house wouldn?t build its self!
We worked long days and sometimes nights to build our house. Father and mother worked hardest Trees needed to be cut down, dragged back to where the cabin was going to be, and make into lumber using a saw. The lumber needed to be piled together just so, and nailed into place. Mother baked, sewed clothing, washed clothing, looked after the children when Sybil wasn?t, and never let the family lose hope.
But in the end the whole family had the satisfaction of knowing we had helped out, and a home for the cold fall days ahead. Sybil was getting used to sleeping under the stars at night, and didn?t want to start sleeping in a house again.
?How would you like to start school this year, Sybil?? Father asked one night at dinner.
?That would be perfect father! I would get to meet some new people and make some friends. I haven?t really done much since we arrived? Sybil exclaimed.
?I have taught Jervis how to read and write so I would still have some help with the crops. Hugh could go with you to school in the morning. And Elsabeth is still too young to go to school and will keep your mother quite busy so she won?t be at idle.? Father joked
Mother smiled at him, for she was never ever idle. Every one acknowledged this too, yet she always remained humble.
?School starts in the next two weeks.? Father added.
Sybil felt excited yet was stressed, and worried about school.
?What if they don?t like me? How will I make friends if I?m not liked?? She thought silently while finishing her dinner.
?This is nonsense, I?ll just be polite, and they?ll have to like me. Why wouldn?t they like a nice refined person??
Chapter Two
New Friends
A grave, punctilious, and overly prim man in his late 30?s stood at the front of the board. He tried to get the ruddy classes? attention by raising his voice and called,
?Children! Children! Please stay quiet!? Then he picked up a long, sanded, thick stick. It was no longer than half of his arm. He proceeded to walk around the front of the room with it eyeing some of the children. Sybil shrunk back on the back less bench she shared with a few other girls. The teacher rapped the stick on his desk loudly and said,
?That?s better.? after the class was dead silent.
?We have two new students joining this class room today. Would my two new students please stand up, come to the front of the room, and tell us your name and age. I?m Mr. Albon; I?ll be your teacher for the year.
?This is the most humiliating thing ever. They are all looking at Hugh and me.? Sybil thought.
When she got to the front of the room, she didn?t freeze up, she said in a audible voice projecting even to the back of the school house,
?I am Sybil Pyne. I am nine years old, sir.?
?Very, well Sybil. You may go back to your seat and sit down now.? Mr. Albon said in his monotone voice.
Hugh stood in front of the room, squeezed his eyes shut tight for a second, then said his name and age.
?Very, well Hugh. You may go back to your seat and sit down now.?
?I did it!? Sybil thought as she walked back to her desk. ?The words
just?.well they just flew?from my mouth! I never thought I could stand in front of so many people looking strait at me, inching forward to hear my every word, and say something. Yet, I did.?
??????????????????????????????????????????????
The fall air blew into Sybil?s bonnet and tickled her bright red hair at lunch time outside. Sybil wondered if she would eat lunch with someone or alone. She didn?t want to eat alone when all of a sudden her thoughts were interrupted.
?Sybil!? A group of girls called to her. ?Sybil, would you like to eat with us today?? They invited.
?Of course!? Sybil answered back.
?Hello, I?m Anne Putnam. I believe we sit on the same bench together in school. These are my friends.?
Anne had dark brown hair and gleaming green eyes that looked strait at the person she was introducing Sybil too.
?This is Betty Parris.?
?Hello nice to meet you Sybil.? She greeted in a friendly voice.
?Pleasure to meet you too betty.? Sybil said quietly
?She?s not the shy one. She?s Reverend Parris?s daughter!? Anne stated
Betty had light brown hair and eyes, with a long smile stretched across her face in a friendly way.
?And this over here is Abigail Williams, but we call her Abby for short?
Abigail managed to squeak out a shy hello.
?Hello Abby? Sybil made the acquaintance of.
?Don?t worry; she?s just a little shy like you. We?ll soon have to talking a great deal more though!? Anne added
?Oh yes, all three of us take or talking time very seriously!? Betty giggled. The rest of the girls did too, including Sybil.
?I think I?ve made some friends.? Sybil thought
Chapter Three
Trouble
Winter in Salem town was quite different from the ones in England. The snow in Salem was always so fresh, fluffy, and white! It was terribly cold though. The small cabin was cold always, and the fire needed to be replenished with fresh wood. It was the same at school. It was even too cold to go outside for lunch anymore.
Sybil had really grown to like school and lunch time, because that is when she got to talk to and be with her friends. Her new friends Anne Putnam, Betty Parris, and Abigail Williams- or Abby as all of her friends called her, accepted her too.
One day at lunch in the middle of January Betty invited Sybil to a little get-together.
?We, as in Abby, Anne, and I come together for a meeting at my place.?
?What do you do at this meeting?? Sybil asked Betty. Sybil was intrigued by this ?meeting?.
?We tell stories and various other activities. Only in the winter though.? What Betty left out was the fact that they did witch craft at these meetings. If she told her that, Sybil might not come. Betty really wanted her to come over for the meeting though.
?Who tells the stories? What kinds of activities? This sounds fun!? Sybil replied.
?Betty?s slave Tituba tells use stories, while we all sit and form a circle by her the activities sort of vary from year to year.? Anne said, lying just a little bit. The activities where always the same.
They were always associated with witch craft. Perhaps one of the favourite
ones they did every year was one of the fortune-telling games. The object of the game was to drop an egg white into a glass of water and see what shape it took. The shape was supposed to reveal your future.
?A friendship circle.? Abby added.
?Yes a friendship circle, its fun, we really want you to be their.?
?Well?..? Sybil thought it over and said after make her decision,
?I?ll be there! At what time should I come??
?Eight o?clock.?
??????????????????????????????????????????????
?Okay girls; are you ready for me to tell you some stories?? Tituba asked with her raspy voice, her haggard face revealed the awful scar of slavery.
?Yes please.? The girls said in unison smiling.
Such a meeting only happened once a year. Sybil didn?t want to miss it either. She knew if she told her parents they would say ?no? and she would have to miss it. So she never told her parents, she never planned on having them find out she was gone either.
Tituba told strange stories she had never heard about before. Stories Tituba probably learned in her native land. After the story telling it was quite late. She faked being asleep when she left so her family would think she was asleep, but now they were going to all be asleep when she got home; the story telling had lasted two whole hours!
?Now girls we will try some activities.? Tituba said picking up a egg, and tall, clear, glass, jar of water.
The girls all smiled at each other. Sybil wasn?t sure of what to do. Tituba explained the game, but Sybil didn?t want to play.
?You mean I invite you over to my house and all you can say to what I want to do is ?no thank you?!? Betty?s light brown eye?s turned into a squinty and mad shape.
?I appreciate your kindness by inviting me over but I just can?t do witch craft. I couldn?t! How would I be able to set a good example for my younger-??
?If you think you?re too good for our old traditions and what to change them, don?t you? If you?re going to be that way I would appreciate it if you left my house now!? Betty intruded on what Sybil was saying.
?Girls please, not so loud. This is a secret meeting, remember?? Tituba begged.
?Okay then. I will! I?ll leave right now.?
?Please do!? Betty retorted opening the door for her to leave.
Sybil was as quiet as she had ever been walking home. Once she was inside her cabin, and settled down into her blankets and sheets on her bed, Sybil began her restless sleep.
Back at Betty?s house- or Reverend Paris?s house, the activities had begun.
?Anne, you can go first.? Tituba said, handing her the jar with water and a single egg.
Anne dropped the egg whites in gingerly. Ann saw the shape of a coffin. Soon afterwards Ann, Betty Parris, and Abigail Williams started behaving strangely?babbling, convulsing, or staring blankly. Tituba started panicking.
Chapter Four
Courage
Sybil never talked to Anne, Betty, or Abby after that night. They didn?t either. There ?friendship circle? no longer included Sybil. And she understood that too.
?What am I going too do? I can?t tell anyone, they?ll tell every one...except for Jervis! That?s it!? Sybil thought one day at lunch.
??????????????????????????????????????????????
That night at home when Jervis wasn?t pre occupied with something or someone, Sybil approached him.
?If I tell you a secret do you promise not to tell?? Sybil asked Jervis shaking a little bit.
?I promise I will never tell a living or even dead soul- that is if I could tell a dead soul I would not.?
She told him everything. Her new friends, there invitation, the witch craft, and how they?re now shunning her.
?This is a really immense problem. Tituba is in court being tried for witch craft now as have 62 others! You could be too. I don?t want this too happen to you. I?m telling mother and father.?
?You promised you would not tell any one at all!?
?That was before I knew this was a dangerous secret! This could harm me, Elasbeth, Hugh, and especially you- the whole family! I have to tell mother and father.?
?I thought I could trust you!?
?You thought you could trust your friends, but they did witch craft! Besides it?s for the best. You can be burned at the stalk in England for these crimes.?
?But this is America. In addition to that I didn?t do any witch craft I was only-?
?You?re right,? Jervis interrupted, ?This isn?t England where they burn you at the stalk for witch craft this is America- where they hang you for witch craft! Even if you didn?t do any thing but take part it, or almost take part in it like you, you are still punishable.?
?Aright, alright Jervis. You can tell Mother and Father, but I?m going to be there with you.?
?Let?s tell them now.?
?What? I could not possibly-?
But Jervis didn?t let her finish. He grabbed her by the wrist and led her to the kitchen no too far from where they were over to both of their parents.
?Sybil has something she wants to tell you.? Jervis began.
?I did something, something horrible, something I?m not proud of???Sybil began to tell her story all over again.
Her mother got tight liped and didn?t speak. She only had that 1000 yard stare on her face the fanily was so used to seeing. Jervis walked quitly out of the room and no one seemed to notice.
?Sybil Lillian Pyne, I can not believe you, my sweet little child could do this to our family. How could you do witch craft? How could you bring this shame upon the family? This s could get you hanged!? His voice boomed.
?I didn?t do witch craft. I left. I didn?t know it would be so bad! I didn?t!?
?Then why didn?t you ask for our permission before you left? Why did you have to keep it a secret for so long??
?I don?t know!? Sybil sobbed, ?I don?t know.?
Father hugged her to stop her crying.
?There, there, you did the right thing by telling us but you should have asked our permission. If something you want to do is so bad you can?t even ask permission for it it?s that bad, it will never be worth it.?
?What should I do Father??
?Well, let me think for a minute.? Father replied. One minute later he answered,
?We could wait for Anne, Betty, and all of the other girls so accuse you of witch craft or you could apologize to the whole town in church on Sunday in front of everybody. It might not cause you to have to go to court.?
?You mean I would have to talk to all of those people, while the stare, and judge me at church on Sunday??
?It?s either that or talk to the entire town while on trial and being judged for real, twice or maybe three times before the court says you are a witch. I?ll give you the night to think about it.?
?Thank you Father.? Sybil said before she walked away to her bed and collapsed into it.
That night many thought swirled around her head so she couldn?t sleep. By morning she knew what to do, and announced it to the whole family at breakfast.
??????????????????????????????????????????????
The coming of Sunday was enviable. Sybil didn?t want to go of course, but she knew she had to muster up all of her strength and courage to save her family from all of the shame. She started the day by putting on her special blue church dress.
?Sybil Pyne has a message she would like to share with you all at church today. You may rise and come up here now Sybil.?
Sybil really did feel like she was on trial. She couldn?t help it though because the same building used as a court was also used as a church, and school.
She walked filled with dread, but if she was happy or terribly worried no one could tell: her face was expressionless. The room had now become quiet. Dead quiet. Sybil swallowed hard, made eye contact so they know she meant it, spoke loudly just as she did in school so everyone could hear her, and went slow enough for everyone to understand what she was saying.! The church was even more hushed after the apology than before. No one dare move, for fear of making too much noise.
?Do you Sybil Lillian Pyne; admit to have taken part in witchcraft??
Reverend Paris?s voice boomed like fathers a few nights ago.
Sybil looked at father. Father didn?t nod or anything. No smile, no wink, not even a frown! Sybil was really on her own now.
?Yes, Reverend Paris. I did take part in witch craft.? Sybil admitted.
The church gasped in horror.
?Do you wish to be forgiven??
?Y-yes, Reverend. Yes I do.? Sybil stuttered.
?Then let?s say a prayer together.? And the Reverend began to recite Palms 32.
?Thank you Reverend Paris.?
?You may sit down now Sybil. Any one else who would like too be forgiven please rise and come forward.? Reverend Paris coaxed.
Sybil rushed to her seat too save her from farther embarrassment.
Just then Anne Putnam stood up and came forward. Abigail Williams looked down, thought for a minute, and came forward too. Betty Paris just looked at them as though they were fools for a moment or two, and then joined them. The church was flabbergasted; they were almost so astounded they could hardly gasp in horror like they did with Sybil.
Reverend Paris not knowing what to do just stood their hushed silent for a minute. He didn?t know what to do; his own daughter had admitted by coming up there that she indeed was a treasonous sinner! But what could he do? He had to forgive her, and he did once she and her other friends had admitted to lying about accusations about witches.
Sybil felt proud of her ex friends, especially Anne for being brave enough to come up and say she had been a liar first.
??????????????????????????????????????????????
When Sybil got home the whole family expressed how proud they were of her. Sybil had delivered her apology in front of the whole church!
?I think you even inspired those three others who confessed as well!? Mother added to the parade of proudness.
?You have made us proud, I know admitting to witch craft was hard for you but I got you a surprise.?
?Oh, Father you shouldn?t have!? Sybil protested.
?But you deserve a fine-looking reward.? He said pulling out a brand new pink hair/hat ribbon.
?Oh it?s quite fine-looking indeed!?
?It will match up with your wild red hair perfectly.? Mother added with a smile.
?Thank you mother,? Sybil said giving her Mother and Father a kiss on the cheek, ?Thank you father.?
Chapter Five
More Forgiveness
The next day at school Sybil decided to talk to her old friends, Anne, Abigail and Betty.
?Hello Anne, Abigail, and Betty.? Sybil greeted, ?I just came over here to tell you that I admired what you did in church yesterday. Thank you for putting to the witch hunt. Enjoy the rest of your lunch.? And Sybil started to leave to eat her lunch alone as she usually did.
Anne, Abigail, and Betty couldn?t eat anymore, something was wrong, something was missing. It was Sybil!
?Sybil? Sybil wait.? Anne called.
?Yes?? Sybil answered.
?We would really like for you to eat lunch with us. The only reason Abigail, Betty, and I confessed was because of you. It wouldn?t be right not to invite you over here.?
Sybil was bewildered and quite taken aback by their offer.
?Of course I will?.friends!?
At this they all smiled and began to eat their lunches. Sybil remained close to all of her friends from that point on, Anne especially. For the most part thing were back to normal in Salam town. And the three friends vowed never to fight and accused as they did during the witch trials again. And they never did.
Looking
Back
1692
A peek into the past
Trials
for
America
Late at night a few girls gather at Betty Paris?s house for stories of witch craft. That night Anne Putnam saw a coffin in one of her ?potions? and started behaving strangely, as did all of the other girls. This was the start of the Salem witch trials.
The fear of witchcraft was always in the colonies and England, especially over Salem, MA, in 1692. This fear ended with the death of many innocent women. Most of the women were middle aged wives or widows. Many implicated others for fear of their own lives. The Salem witch trials pinpointed the underlying tension that was coming to a head in many of the colonies due to religion and social standings.
A court room decided to fate of a accused witch and many were killed because of these accusations.
Tituba was an Indian slave and one of the first, but certainly not the last, to be accused. Little exists of the documents about the Salem Town witch trials. Most were probably destroyed out of embarrassment of the accusers.
The Salem Witch trials started on March 1, 1691, and ended on November 25, 1693 due to lack of physical evidence. With out proper evidence people just stopped believing the accusers.
No one really knows what happened for sure. It could have justbeen a cry for attention from these girls.
Here is the Procedure Used in the Salem Witch Trails:
1. The afflicted person makes a complaint to the Magistrate about a suspected witch. The complaint is sometimes made through a third person.
2. The Magistrate issues a warrant for the arrest of the accused person.
3. The accused person is taken into custody and examined by two or more Magistrates. If, after listening to testimony, the Magistrate believes that the accused person is probably guilty, the accused is sent to jail for possible reexamination and to await trial.
4. The case is presented to the Grand Jury. Depositions relating to the guilt or innocence of the accused are entered into evidence.
5. If the accused is indicted by the Grand Jury, he or she is tried before the Court of Oyer and Terminer. A jury, instructed by the Court, decides the defendant's guilt.
6. The convicted defendant receives his or her sentence from the Court. In each case at Salem, the convicted defendant was sentenced to be hanged on a specified date.
7. The Sheriff and his deputies carry out the sentence of death on the specified date.
The people accused sadly never regained there good reputation.
Meet the doll
The doll from the front cover has quite an interesting story. Before she became a Sybil doll she was sold on eBay, nothing about her is know before that point. The seller didn?t know what brand the doll was, but it wasn?t an AG doll. When I first saw it I thought it was a re wigged Berenguer Class Mates doll; it wasn?t that either. It was a true counterfeit AG! A member from HB had bought her but they didn?t bond and the member decided to sell the doll. Before I knew it the doll was sitting at my door step just screaming, ?I need a story! Make me a wannabe AG historical doll!? And so it happened. With a downy dunk, a lot of Mr. Clean Magic Erasers, a new outfit and story, the wannabe had become ?Sybil Tabitha Pyne?. Move over Elizabeth, there?s a new doll in the Felicity collection, and she?s here to stay!
FOOT NOTES
This is not how the salem witch trails ended of course, but it's very similer to what Anne Putnam did 23 years after the Salam witch trails. Besides, does a story really have to be correct to every last detail forit too be entertaining? I dont think so.
